Italy is southern Europe's largest oil and gas producer. Oil production will exceed 100,000 b/d throughout the 2020s thanks to the long-awaited start-up of TotalEnergies' Tempa Rossa field. Future output is underpinned by this and the largest field - Eni's Val d'Agri. Together, these deposits will account for almost 90% of Italian liquid production by the mid-2020s. Gas production will remain around 350 mmcfd before increasing once Eni's Cassiopea project, offshore Sicily, comes onstream. Upstream operators in Italy have typically faced bureaucratic challenges, including delays to environmental approvals at the regional level. However, Italy's current government, which was installed in 2022, intends to proactively support domestic gas output to boost security of supply. If prices remain high, this could unlock further upstream investment, most notably thanks to the relaxation of a previous moratorium on offshore drilling within 12 miles of the Italian coast.
