Report summary
The Klaipeda LNG terminal is located in the southern part of Klaipeda state seaport in Lithuania. It includes a 450m jetty, the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) -"Independence"- and an 18km gas pipeline connecting the terminal to the Lithuanian gas transmission system. The Independence FSRU has a regas capacity of 2.92 mmtpa (384 mmcfd) and a storage capacity is 170,000m³ of LNG. As the "Independence" name indicates, the aim of the project is to reduce Lithuania's, and potentially the whole Baltic region's, dependence on Russian gas. The terminal has been successful in this regard; in 2018 Lithuania imported LNG equivalent of 19% of total gas demand (0.68 bcm), in 2019 this had risen to 70% (1.56 bcm). The terminal's owner and operator is Klaipedos Nafta, which is 72.32% owned by the Lithuanian state, 10.41% owned by Achema fertiliser group. All other stakeholders own less than a 5% stake each.
