Report summary
Knight Hawk's production increased by over 40% between 2020 and 2022 as the economy recovered from the pandemic. This includes the addition of output from the acquired Viper mine from Arch. After falling during the 2023-24 period, output is expected to trend back to 2022's level by 2026, particularly due to the start-up of the American Eagle project. The Lost Prairie project's reserve base is large enough to support a medium-scale mine operation for more than 40 years, but given weakening market conditions, we don't think it'll be developed. Knight Hawk is one of the lowest-cost producers in the Illinois Basin. Its low-cost position is driven by higher mine productivity and relatively higher preparation plant yields compared to other producers in the basin.
